Illinois Retired Teachers Association
Henry/Stark General Meeting
March 11, 2020
The Henry/Stark Unit of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association met on March 11, 2020 at the Annawan Community Center. The pledge was recited. Roger Hawk said the blessing. Our meal was served by the Annawan United Methodist Church. The raffle drawing followed the meal.
Brock Tumbleson presented an informative program on antiques and collectibles. Brock is not only a funeral director but buys and sells antiques and collectibles. He shared with us many items in his collection that he would be reluctant to part with, such as, the Gunsmoke lunch box and thermos that he carried as a young boy. Other school related items were the grade school tablets and a school bell. His collection included kitchen items and unique pictures. However, the item that caused us all to grimace, was the mean-looking hook that was used to extract teeth in the early days. The value of antiques has dropped because people, especially the younger generation, are not interested in them. Even though antique shops and antique malls are still selling, online selling is trending now.
Pam gave the secretary’s report on the Nov. 13, 2019 meeting. Roger Hawk made the motion, seconded by Steve Morrison to accept the secretary’s report. Julie read the treasurer’s report. Balance as of November was $3,406.82. Total receipts were $2,580.00, total expenditures were $1,266.00 leaving a balance of $4720.82. The raffle made $188. Roger Hawk made the motion, seconded by Steve Morrison to accept the treasurer’s report. Julie acknowledged the thank-you notes the unit received for the two donations to the IRTA Foundation in memory of Jane Bachman and ½ the raffle money from the November 2019 meeting. We received a thank you from Cleta for the Walmart gift card she received after her program.
Phyllis Dotson passed away in January and she had been our corresponding secretary for many years. The officers recommended a $100 donation be made to the IRTA Foundation in Phyllis’s memory. Linnea Gustafson made the motion, seconded by Alice Webster to make the donation. Motion carried. President Sue introduced Denice Brown as the new corresponding secretary.
We need to be vigilant about insurance changes the governor is suggesting and to be sure to return all voter voice messages. Jim Peck made the motion, seconded by Bud Aupperle to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried.
